  • What is emotional intelligence? How does it relate to self-awareness? Is it necessary for self-care? According to Oxford Languages, emotional intelligence is the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and sympathetically. It is one's ability to understand, evaluate, control, and express their own emotions while also understanding the emotions of others. It is both being self-aware of one's own individual emotions while simultaneously being mindful of others emotions. It is a skill that allows one to deal with their own emotions as well as the emotions of others, both of which are integral to stress management. Emotional intelligence can be enhanced with practice. An enhanced emotional intelligence helps one become aware of situations, events, signs, and triggers that lead to stress, allowing one to both monitor their stress levels as well as manage and take appropriate action/means to lower the stress level. It also allows one to understand, as well as have true empathy for others, which fosters enhanced and more effective communication. Stress management is a problem everyone faces to varying degrees. The issue with stress is that it is as unique as the individual having it. What may cause stress for me, may not for you. What may cause stress for both of us, most likely will be a different level of stress. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to stress management because stress at its roots is tied to emotion, and everyone has unique emotions. Understanding your own emotions, or at the very least understand what causes certain emotions, will allow you to better understand your stress. Health and wellness are more than just what you eat and how often you exercise. The mind-body connection to health & wellness has been proven over and over and as the saying goes, stress kills. It's important to take care of our whole self, even those messy emotions we may not want to deal with.
